How Long Do Brake Rotors Last?

Part of the System

You press the brake pedal, and your vehicle stops. Right? Yes. But the system that enables that to happen has several components. One of those is the brake rotor. Each wheel that’s part of disc braking has one. In fact, the terms rotors and discs are often used interchangeably. FYI: Nearly all modern cars have disc brakes (rotors) on the front wheels. Some higher-end cars have them on the back wheels, as well, while many models use drum brakes on the back. Disc brakes are more expensive, but they offer better stopping and control. Since the weight of the motor is at the front of the car, using the combination package (disc in front, drum in rear) creates a good balance between performance and price. Maybe that leads you to the question of how long rotors last. The experienced, ASE-certified technicians at Integrity Automotive in Williamstown, New Jersey, are glad to assist you with this and all other brake repair needs.

The Need for Brake Rotor Replacement

Rotors are made of metal and are, therefore, quite durable. However, they do eventually show signs of wear. While they don’t need replacing as often as brake pads, most car owners can anticipate replacing them somewhere between the 50,000-and-70,000-mile mark. However, if a rotor has sustained damage (vehicle crash, overheating that leads to warping, etc.), it might need replacing sooner. Further, you may notice signs as you drive and apply brakes that point to the need for a service visit. Our mechanics can determine if the underlying cause is brake pads, rotors, and/or something else. For example, your system needs attention if you hear grinding as you brake. That’s the sound of metal cutting against metal. Also, a squealing noise that occurs during braking is a signal to get brake repair. Finally, you may feel a wobble, shake, or vibration through the steering wheel as you brake to slow down. That could be the warning of a warped rotor.
